Considering a change in your career?

According to a recent poll by YouGov, 28% of British workers are currently dissatisfied in their careers and out of the 2,000 people surveyed, 11% stated that they’re considering a career change during the next year. Have you been considering a possible career change or are you currently trying to find an opportunity in your desired field?

In this article, Kyna Associates looks at the essential things you need to consider before making the change:

Do you really want to change your career path? It’s important that you’ve considered the reasons behind wanting a change. 55% of those surveyed by YouGov stated that they were dissatisfied with their current salary. If this is an issue which affects you too, consider addressing it to your manager. Similarly, if you love the work you do or you feel as though there is no further progression, take a look at roles within the same or similar industries which could provide you with your next challenge.

Think about what you enjoy in your current role: Think about the things which you enjoy doing on a day to day basis and anything your current employer does which makes work more enjoyable. Think back to any problems you solved and whether the skills you used could be transferrable to your desired field. Are you an excellent people or project manager? Could you transfer your experiences to your desired sector?

Be clear about what you’re looking for: This is a good opportunity to think about what you need from your next role. YouGov’s survey revealed that employee satisfaction wasn’t just about salary. 45% of respondents were concerned that their current role doesn’t offer any opportunities for career progression; so if progression is important to you, make sure your next employer is able to offer clear paths for career progression and opportunities for development. Remember to think about locations you’re willing to consider, whether you’d be open to relocate and the kind of environment you’re looking to work in.

If experience is an issue, plan ahead: If experience in your desired field is absolutely necessary, put together a plan and decide how you’ll go about gaining relevant skills and experience. If you’re willing to stay in your current role for the next 12 months, think about courses or tools you could use in order to increase your chances of securing your dream opportunity. Interested in Web Development? Think about how many hours you could spend a week teaching yourself to code or whether you’d be willing to offer free services in order to enhance your portfolio.

Consider a salary cut or a step down in seniority: If you’re certain about a change in your career, think about starting in a junior or entry-level position. Not only will this allow you to get a better background and understanding of the industry you’re looking to work in, but you may also have the opportunity to use any skills you’ve gained in previous roles.
