India to overtake U.S. with number of developers by 2017

A new study has released figures that suggests’ India will soon overtake the U.S. in the number of Software Developers by the year 2017. It also states that whilst there are 18.4 million Software Developers currently in the world, this figure will rise by 45% to 26.4 million within the next 6 years.

There are a number of suggestions as to why India’s number of Developers is rising so significantly with some attributing it to a rise in population, and in particular the number of young people. Almost half of India’s 1.2 billion population are under the age of 25 years and many see IT as a way into the middle classes.

These are fantastic figures for the UK’s IT sector with a constant need for IT personnel that is only going to get bigger. Companies within the UK are seeing a lack of suitable candidates for their growing needs and as such this is leading to a reliance on contractors and outsourcing companies.

The UK is struggling to find enough home grown talent to suit IT needs and something needs to be done from an early age to get more young people interested in career in IT. With unemployment in the UK so high, surely the time has come for IT to be pushed towards the forefront of education within British schools?
